TLC's Professional Development Awards for UT Foreign Language Instructors

2013 Recipients Announced

The Texas Language Center is pleased to announce its Professional Development Award recipients for 2013! These awards are made to instructors of languages other than English at UT who are seeking to develop new materials, courses, or methods for teaching their languages, or who may need to attend a conference or purchase materials in order to improve their teaching.

The awards, ranging in value from $500-$1500, will be used to supplement instructor salaries, purchase materials, and/or subvent travel to professional conferences. This year’s recipients, including graduate students, lecturers, and tenured or tenure-track faculty, are:

  • Jesse Abing, Media Project Developer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese—“Lingua-Culture Illustrated Video Project”
  • Holly Brining, Assistant Instructor and PhD Candidate in the Department of Germanic Studies —“Cultural Learning Modules for Second Semester German”
  • Emilie Destruel, Assistant Instructor in the Department of French and Italian—“Language in context with French movie trailers”
  • Laila Familiar, Lecturer of Arabic & Director of the Arabic Summer Institute in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies—“Teaching Arabic Culture Through Audiovisuals”
  • Vivian Flanzer, Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of Portuguese Language Program in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese—“Funding to Attend ACTFL 2013”
  • David Huenlich, M.A. in the Department of Germanic Studies—“German Language Learning Stations”
  • Lydia Huerta, Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese—“Rethinking lexical variation in 611D Spanish Bilingual”
  • Eliseo Jacob, Doctoral Student and Assistant Instructor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese—“Attend OPI Assessment Workshop”
  • Min Jung Jee, Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies—“Multimedia textbook for Advanced Korean class”
  • Guillermina Ogando Lavín, Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese—“Corpus of vocabulary based on oral data in Spain”
  • Karin Maxey, Assistant Instructor in the Department of Germanic Studies—“Comprehending and Comparing Texts in Beginning German”
  • Delia Montesinos, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese—“Novel Activities for Spanish Heritage Learners”
  • Fehintola Mosadomi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies and African and African Diaspora Studies—“Tongue twisters as an effective pedagogical tool ”
  • Jeannette Okur, Lecturer of Turkish in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies—“Türkiye'den Sesler! (Voices from Turkey)”
  • Clare Perry, PhD Candidate and Assistant Instructor in the Department of French and Italian—“Mixed Media First-Year French Cultural Materials”
  • Sandra Sotelo-Miller, Assistant Instructor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese—“A Dialogar - What did they say again?”
  • Per Urlaub, Assistant Professor in the Department of Germanic Studies—“Reading-Based Assessment in Language Programs ”
  • Marcos Amengual Watson, Assistant Instructor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese—“Spanish language pronunciation: hands-on approach”

In addition, Nancy Guilloteau, lecturer in the Department of French and Italian, received a special Course-Development Fellowship for creating materials for intensive French.
