Today! LANGUAGE MATTERS: Culture Awareness and Language Proficiency through Movie Trailers in the Beginner Classroom

Wed, April 16, 2014 • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM • Texas Union Sinclair Suite, UNB 3.128

with Emilie Destruel Johnson and Céline Gaillard, the University of Iowa

Because of the lower proficiency level of their students, teachers can have difficulties finding and using appropriate authentic material in the classroom.  It can also be challenging for them to teach culture in the target language at the beginner level. This presentation will show how instructors can use movie trailers to develop both the cultural awareness and language proficiency of the learners. Viewing these short, authentic videos during class can do more than help students with their listening comprehension. Teachers can create activities built around the theme of the unit to review vocabulary, new grammatical concepts, but also to make students produce both written and spoken language. The movie trailer can also initiate a cultural discussion in which students will be more engaged because the video, a product of the target culture, will have also showed concretely the practices of the culture.
