Last week, Anke Sanders defended her dissertation and was then surprised to learn she had also received the 2014 Texas Foreign Language Teaching Excellence Award!

Dr. Thomas J. Garza, director of the Texas Language Center and Germanic Studies Chair, Kit Belgum joined Dr. Sanders’ doctoral supervisor, Dr. Diane Schallert, and her dissertation committee to present the award.

The TFLTE award is based on language student nominations. Dr. Sanders has received many nominations from students throughout her years of teaching at UT-Austin, and this year was no exception. Nominations consistently noted that she was an inspirational teacher who cared deeply about each of her students. Dr. Sanders received also high praise for reaching out to her students using a wide variety of creative instructional methods while also presenting challenging content.

Dr. Sanders has taught all of the lower-division German courses over the past five years, and her colleagues found her equally laudable. They told us that Dr. Sanders was an outstanding teacher, an enthusiastic and supportive colleague, a dedicated mentor, and an inspiring coordinator. They characterized her as productive and energetic as well as being modest, respectful, and always eager to get input from others.

Congratulations, Anke, for receiving this well-deserved recognition!
