CMAS Graduate Portfolio Plática: Juan F. Carrillo

"So Far From Home: Portraits of Mexican-Origin Scholarship Boys"

Wed, March 3, 2010 | Cissy McDaniel Parker Deans Conference Room, Sanchez Building (SZB 238), The University of Texas at Austin

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Drawing from the work on “scholarship boys,” this portfolio plática by Juan F. Carillo (doctoral candidate in curriculum and instruction/cultural studies in education with graduate portfolio in Mexican American studies) complicates the neat victory narratives often associated with working-class students that “make it.” Specifically, through the use of life history interviews, the research presented in this plática examines how Mexican-origin scholarship boys use “ghetto nerd” masculinities, culturally situated intelligences, and philosophical perspectives related to “home” to challenge and cope with the microgressions in K-12 schooling and higher education.
