"The Process of Becoming: The Political Construction of Texas' Lone STAAR System of Accountability and College Readiness"

This portfolio plática by Patricia D. Lopez will draw upton a three-year ethnographic study examining the politics of Texas' new system of accountability and college readiness. The presentation will discuss the political life of The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) beginning with the early conceptualization of the system, the passage of House Bill 3, and the unfolding of the system into practice. Central to this analysis is an understanding of whose knowledge informed this system, and whose knowledge did not, as well as the forms of agency exerted across various contexts and time spans.

Patricia D. Lopez is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Educational Administration with a Graduate Portfolio in Mexican American Studies. The chair of her dissertation committee is Angela Valenzuela, Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Educational Administration.
