CMAS Announces 2012 Américo Paredes Arts and Letters Award
Tue, April 17, 2012
Each year, the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) holds a lecture or symposia in honor of Américo Paredes, one of the Center's principal founders and first director, whose service to CMAS, The University of Texas at Austin, and Mexican American scholarship spanned more than 40 years.
To honor his memory, CMAS will present the 2012 Américo Paredes Arts and Letters Award to Lourdes Portillo. The award will be presented every four years to an individual whose work has a significant impact on the field of Mexican American studies. Ana Castillo, award-winning poet, essayist, and novelist was the recipient of this award in May 2009.
Mexico-born and Chicana identified, Lourdes Portillo's films have focused on the search for Latino identity. She has worked in a richly varied range of forms, from television documentary to satirical video-film collage.
The awards ceremony will include a screening of La Ofenda: The Days of the Dead (1988) and a master-class conversation with Professor Charles Ramirez Berg (Radio-Television-Film). The ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 3, 2012 in the Auditorium of the Student Activity Center (SAC). The program begins at 5:00 pm.
This event is free and open to the public.
