Carlos E. Castañeda Postdoctoral Fellowship Profile (2013-14)
Isabel Millán, Ph.D., is the 2013-2014 recipient of the Carlos E. Castañeda Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Center for Mexican American Studies. She received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in American Culture with a certificate in Latina/o Studies from the University of Michigan in 2013. She holds an MA in Ethnic Studies from San Francisco State University, and a BA in Anthropology and Women’s Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests include queer bilingual children’s cultural productions across the Americas, with an emphasis on Canada, the U.S., and México.
Dr. Millán will complete her manuscript, (Play)Grounds for Dismissal: Niñas Raras in Transborder Children’s Cultural Studies, while in residence at CMAS. This research examines children's literature, television, short films, and comics that challenge what she terms childnormativity, or the ways in which children's cultural productions replicate normalcy. Dr. Millán utilizes literary, media, and cultural theories in order to propose transborder children's cultural studies as a disciplinary bridge between studies of girlhood, children, Latinidad, and queer theory. She is also conducting research on two subsequent projects. The first explores the role of Latinas in comics and science fiction. The second examines the role of religious figures by drawing links between historical events and contemporary representations of nuns. This project is tentatively titled Religious Misfits: Unveiling Transgressive Acts & Dissident Covenants.
In the spring semester 2014, Dr. Millán will teach an undergraduate course, "Transborder Children's Literature," and give a public lecture on her research.
