Screening: Independent Short Films by Women Make Movies

Date: October 30, 2007

Location: Calhoun 100

Time: 6:30 PM

The Center for Women's and Gender Studies (CWGS) presents a night of short films from independent women filmmakers that address global issues of women and technology. The event is free and open to the public. Scholars from CWGS will lead a discussion following the screening.

The films include:

"Nalini By Day, Nancy by Night," a film by Sonali Gulati (27 minutes).
This insightful documentary explores complex issues of globalization, capitalism and identity. Gulati, an Indian immigrant living in the United States, explores the ramifications of outsourcing telephone service jobs to India through a witty and personal journey into India's call centers.

"Performing the Border," a film by Ursula Biemann (42 minutes).
A video essay set in the Mexican-U.S. border town of Ciudad Juarez, where U.S. multinational corporations assemble electronic equipment just across from El Paso, Texas. This experimental work explores the sexualization of the border region through labor division, prostitution and sexual violence in the public sphere.

"Writing Desire," a film by Ursula Biemann (23 minutes).
Although under-age pen pals and mail-order brides have always been part of the transnational exchange of sex in the marketplace of desire, the Internet has accelerated these transactions. Biemann simulates the gaze of the Internet shopper looking for the imagined docile, traditional, pre-feminist, but Web-savvy mate.
