In his Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, Kant presents the Categorical Imperative as the supreme principle of morality. Among the formulations he gives is the Formula of the Kingdom of Ends: Act as a legislating member of the Kingdom of Ends. Some interpreters see that as encapsulating a classically liberal ideal; others, as posing a radical challenge to that ideal. Some find it inspiring; others find it hopelessly naive. This talk explores these clashing interpretations and proposes a way to reconcile them.
