A Roundtable Discussion: Historicizing Women’s Bodies as Political Platforms & Agendas

Fri, September 13, 2013 | GAR 1.102 (CONFERENCE ROOM)

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Inspired by the recent Texas abortion bill and Wendy Davis’s filibuster, the Symposium will kick-off this year’s schedule with a roundtable discussion of the historical context of the use of women’s bodies and reproductive issues as political platforms, agendas, and maps not only within the US but also throughout the world.  After brief presentations by History Grad Students Lurrita Dubois and Jessica Luther, Dr. Lisa Moore will read her poem, “Cowgirl Filibuster,” inspired by the actions of Wendy Davis, and provide commentary as well as facilitate a discussion among our panel and audience members.  We hope this discussion can elucidate the ways in which women’s bodies have been at the forefront of state and social concerns throughout history.
