Automatically "Understanding" Language?

Fri, September 7, 2007 | PAR 201

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

What does it mean to understand a text? Can we build a machine that automatically "understands" text?

Unlike the robots of science fiction capable of almost human interaction, when we speak today about automatically "understanding" text, we refer to something much more rudimentary - but with the potential to lead to better machine translation, voicemail systems that are not annoying, and search engines able to answer even complicated questions consistently.

Dr. Erk describes her project where annotators analyzed the meaning of German newspaper text and illustrates how computers can use these results to learn to do the same.
