Femme Friday: How Big is Your God?

Fri, February 13, 2009 | GAR 2.108

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Based on her ethnographic field research, Professor O'Brien will discuss the contradictions and tensions experienced by self-described queer Christians and the congregations that support them. Queer Christianity is the basis of a growing social movement that reflects the frequently over-looked stories of persons who identify as lesbian, gay and/or transgender. This movement is also changing the way in which many mainstream Christian denominations view god and politics.

Jodi O'Brien is the Louis B. Gaffney Professor of Arts and Sciences and Chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Seattle University. Her work focuses on social differences and inequality with an emphasis on gender, race/ethnicity, social class, sexuality, and religion.
