"Wearing the Pants: American Girls and Second-Wave Feminism"

Thu, April 16, 2009 | BUR 436A

5:00 PM

In the late 1960s and 1970s, feminism was variously a force of attraction, ambivalence, and disavowal in girls' lives. Paris's research considers some of the ways in which feminists addressed and influenced girls during this period, and explores girls' own understandings of the feminist movement. The socialization and experiences of girls have yet to be well-integrated into the broader history of second-wave feminism; this talk will argue for the importance of generation as a tool for reappraising the era's activism.
