African Feminisms Series  Seminar - “Let me Tell You What Africa Means to Me…: Stories of Africa from America”

 Calling on all women born and/or raised on the African continent to an afternoon of animated conversations about the meanings of Africa to its recent immigrants who now call the United States home by choice or otherwise. This afternoon of conversations is part of a larger initiative open to all called: Remembering Africa, Imagining Home: African Oral History Project at the University of Texas at Austin (RAIH- UT’s). The main goal of RAIH-UT is to audio and video record stories of recent African immigrants to the United States (those here since 1900). Those stories will be archived at UT as a research resource that tells the story of Africa’s recent diaspora, and its continued dis/engagement with the continent. Knowledge about current issues in Africa blooms and withers in the public imagination as celebrities sojourn to a particular country, or when there is a tragedy on the continent – save the recent North African uprisings. What remains hidden from “public” view that this project seeks to tap into, is the story of the Africans who have immigrated and/or assimilated into American culture and society, and how they remain engaged with the continent while contributing to life in their new home and society.
