AADS is pleased to announce our Spring 2012 Visiting Performing Artist Fellow, Lenelle Moise. Moise holds an MFA in Playwriting from Smith College, and describes herself as a “full-time artist committed to creating aesthetically dynamic art for social change”. A playwright, poet, and performance artist, Lenelle Moise is both prolific and accomplished, with a long and varied performance history which has taken her all over the country. Further, her essays and poems have been published in national journals, and she has recorded three studio albums.

During her fellowship, Moise hopes to develop a solo performance entitled ‘Ache What Make’, an artistic response to the 2010 earthquake in Moise’s birthplace of Haiti. Integrating UT resources, such as the Benson Latin American Collection and the Fine Arts Library, Moise will work to solidify her performance while teaching the course entitled ‘Prompt and Circumstance: A Creative Lab for the Performing Writer’. This course, which Moise hopes will “empower [her] students to create theatre for social change”, will culminate in performances of student work to the campus and surrounding community.

Lenelle Moise was just awarded the Ruby Prize for her play "Merit."  The Ruby Prize is a national new play award for women of color playwrights presented by Southern Rep of New Orleans.  The prize carries a $10,000 award, a residency at Hedgebrook and a reading of "Merit" in New York City.

Congratulations, Lenelle, and welcome to Austin and the UT campus! For more information about this artist, please visit her website.
