AFR Major Participates in College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational
Posted: April 9, 2013
This is UT Austin's first year sending a competing team to CUPSI, the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational, which was held at Barnard College in NYC April 3-6. The UT team placed 18th out of 59 teams from around the United States, missing semifinals by 3 slots, right behind Harvard and Yale and were the only university in Texas represented at the national level this year.
At the end of the festival, the Poetry Slam Team received the "Spirit of the Slam" award for embodying the idea that poetry slam is not about competition - it's about the victory of sharing your poems with people and creating a safe space for others to do the same.
You can view their poem entitled "Fisher", which is about the Fisher v Texas affirmative action case, in this clip:
The team performed this poem during our preliminary bout against UC Berkeley, University of Washington - Seattle, and Rutgers State University.
