Honors Program

African and African Diaspora Studies Honors Program

The Honors Program provides ambitious students with distinguished academic records the opportunity to work closely with an AADS faculty member to conduct original research that will result in the honors thesis. The thesis should be on a specialized topic relevant to African and African Diaspora Studies and is expected to be about 60 to 80 pages in length. Students are encouraged to seek out professors with whom they have already worked, preferably during their office hours. 

Majors who plan to seek special honors in African and African Diaspora Studies should apply to the undergraduate adviser for admission to the honors program no later than two semesters before they expect to graduate. The requirements for graduation with special honors are:

1) a University grade point average of at least 3.00;

2) a 3.5 grade point average in the coursework required for the AADS major;

3) an honors thesis completed during the two-semester AFR 679H African and African Diaspora Studies Honors Tutorial Course;

4) a grade of at least B in each semester of the two-semester AFR 679H African and African Diaspora Studies Honors Tutorial Course; and

5) completion in residence at the University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree.
