Course Description

While Asian American Studies encompasses a wide range of issues and theoretical approaches, this course will introduce you to some key sociological themes through the study of Asian immigrants' and Asian Americans experiences. Topics will include: immigration, labor, hate crimes, theories on identity and community formation, cultural representations, and the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Our goal will be to create a common vocabulary that will enable a lively and critical engagement and discussion of the complex experiences of Asian Americans. We will read materials from history, anthropology, sociology, cultural, and media studies. In particular, we will track some convergences and divergences inherent in these different disciplinary approaches to knowledge production and the consequences for the field of Asian American Studies.

Grading Policy

Participation: 10% Participation in class makes a huge difference. I encourage you to ask questions, express doubts, answer your classmates' questions, and be engaged intellectually. I urge you to complete all readings so that we can have active participation. Our collective success this semester hinges on your individual participation! This participation is crucial for not just your own learning experience, but also your classmates learning in the classroom. Film Summaries: 40% Please turn in FOUR reaction papers on films shown in class. These reaction papers, approx. 1 page long, are based on questions posed before the film. Take home exams (mid-term and final): 25% each. I encourage you to work in groups to discuss your answers and prepare outlines; however, each one of you will write your exam individually. I will consider it as academic misconduct if two or more students turn in the exact same exam, or an exam with similarly structured sentences. Such exams will not be graded.
