AMS 331 • The American West to 1880: Art, Photography, Culture

Examines the image and history of the West as it was seen through the eyes of early explorers, artists, and scientists. The conceptual goal of this course is to use art as a cultural index to examine changing perceptions of the American West, the Indian, and the frontier experience. It will study the culture of the American West through paintings, lithographs, maps, photogrphs, first-hand accounts, and literature. Major emphasis will be placed on the painters and photographers and their role in American culture. The course will make use of the extensive collections in nearby museums.
