AMS 370 • Painting as History-W

Course Description

This course is intended to present an alternative view of American art by concentrating on those works that illustrate history and/or are connected with a narrative tradition. We begin with classic academic history painting of the 18th and 19th centuries and then broaden our purview to include genre painting, landscape (as a kind of land-speak), western painting, and contemporary installations. Issues that we will be considering: How do history/stories get "told" in paint? What/whose stories get told and how? Whose history is it? How is history retrieved, recollected, and (re)presented in art?
