Shawn Michelle Smith, Associate Professor and Graduate Director of Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, focuses on gender and race in visual culture, with an emphasis on early American photography. Books include American Archives:  Gender, Race, and Class in Visual Culture (Princeton University 1999) and Photography on the Color Line:  W. E. B. Du Bois, Race, and Visual Culture (Duke University 2004). She is also a photo-based visual artist.
