"Reading Neoliberalism and Asian American Racialization in aka Don Bonus (1995) and Better Luck Tomorrow (2002)"
Fri, March 6, 2009 • 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM • BUR 436B
This talk focuses on the significance of neoliberalism, a dominant political economic logic since the 1970s, to Asian American racial formations in the post-65 period. By engaging in a brief analysis of two films frequently screened within Asian American Studies, Spencer Nakasano's independent documentary about a Cambodian refugee teen, aka Don Bonus and Justin Lin's feature film, Better Luck Tomorrow, this talk inverts a common interpretive schematic that inaccurately situates these texts as representing the polar opposites of a model minority discourse.
