I began the joint MA/PhD program in the fall of 2009 and finished my master's in 2011. My research addresses the precarious nature of identity formation, processes of racialization, and belonging in urban sectors of post-communist Tirana, Albania. My dissertation explores issues of identity and race, focusing on such aspects as: relationships between Albanian and Greek communities (especially the livelihoods of Albania return-migrants), relationships between Albanian, Roma, and Egyptian communities, regional and geographic tensions within Albania, and questions of race that extend beyond differences in skin color. I have just returned to Austin after conducting dissertation fieldwork mostly in areas around Tirana. I received my bachelor's degree in 2008 from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. From 2008 until 2009 I was a Fulbright fellow in Albania. My dissertation fieldwork research was funded by a grant from the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) and I am finishing my last year of a NSF graduate research fellowship. I hope to complete my dissertation by the fall of 2015.
