ANT 391 • Feminist Theory in Latin America

Course Description

This course looks at recent debates in gender studies and feminist theory and practice in Latin America. In the first part of the course, we will critically read and discuss works that have shaped the debates in Latin American feminism, as well as situating Latin American Feminisms with respect to First Wave feminism and US Third World feminism. The second part of the course will explore issues of gender in relation to specific social issues: e.g. gender and economy, violence, race/ethnicity, revolutionary/social movements, indigenous rights and autonomy, land and resources, and globalization. In the last part of the course, we will consider new forms of women?s activism in Latin America, examining the differing ways that women are reshaping political participation in local, national, and global movements. The course assumes a working knowledge of gender and feminist theory and the ability to read Spanish.
