Course Description
The seminar will look at how gender and performance implicate each other. Ethnographic materials from outside the West (including Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Japan), and historical materials from within the West (including essays by New Historicists) will stimulate cross-cultural consideration of topics too often addressed from presentist and/or ethnocentric perspectives.
The list of readings will be made available shortly before the beginning of the semester. Books and sets of essays will constitute each week's reading, and students will be expected to write a half-page comment for each meeting, plus either a term paper or an annotated course syllabus of their own devising.
