Course Description
The course will examine a number of approaches to the cultural construction of self and emotion. Some preliminary readings will point to issues currently receiving attention in the field. Then we will read a number of ethnographies that address these questions directly, several of them concerning societies in South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. An effort will be made to see how we can avoid simply comparing "us" to "them" and to consider instead how one non-Western society can be fruitfully compared to another.
