Course Description

This course is a workshop in qualitative research design and proposal/prospectus writing. Among the topics to be considered are epistemology; ethics; problem definition; range and selection of research methodologies in the social sciences and related humanities, anthropological field methods; participant observation, interviews, archives, and other data sources; analysis and interpretation; effective presentation of analysis and results. Feminist, activist, inter-disciplinary, and multi-sited methodologies will be discussed in addition to more traditional approaches. Furthermore, there will be attention to quantitative methods and the use of "mixed methods." This course is designed for students actively preparing research proposals and/or a dissertation prospectus. In addition to the preparation of a complete research proposal or dissertation prospectus, students will be expected to: -- complete all additional writing exercises by the deadlines; -- serve effectively as a writing partner and peer reviewer to other students; -- take an active part in discussions of readings and student work
