Course Description
The goals of this course are to introduce you to the study of language use across cultures and to develop your skills in investigating and understanding the role that language plays in the formation of culture, ways of thinking, and ways of interpreting behavior and events. Each of you will collect everyday language examples for several analytical exercises. You will use this language data as a basis for examining and questioning concepts discussed in lectures and readings, such as ethnicity, identity, power, status, and gender as they emerge in everyday interactions between people. .
