Course Description

This course will introduce you to two ways to look at relationships between language and culture. We will look at and learn how to do conversation analysis (CA) and we will look at ways to analyze narrative. Course material will include literature on conversation analysis, including the concepts of repair, turn-taking, assessment, negotiation of meaning, context, identity and other social membership category work.It will also include readings on narrative analysis. Questions of the utility of research methodologies with respect to research questions and research design will be discussed throughout the semester. This course will provide you with skills in · conversation analysis as a methodology · narrative analysis as a methodology · data transcription and analysis
