Course Description
This is an introduction to graduate cultural studies. We will read the Simon During Reader with a range of canonical articles (Adorna, Barthes, Hall, Foucault, De Certeau, Spivak, Bhabha, West, Butler, Sedgwick, etc). We will also read Benjamin's The Arcades Project, Allucquere Stone's Desire and Technology at the Close of the Mechanical Age, Donna Haraway's Modest Witness, and other things. The course will also be structured around the colloquium for the doctoral portfolio in cultural studies in which graduate students and faculty will give talks (Mondays 12-1, not every week but frequently) and the continued discussion from 1-3 will the off from the talk and related articles. Students in the doctoral portfolio program are NOT required to take this course, though they are welcome.
