Course Description

This course is an introduction to the theoretical and methodological foundations of the study of discourse from a sociocultural perspective. Readings include linguistic, philosophical, psychological, sociological and anthropological contributions to the understanding of discourse. We will discuss and analyze contexts such as everyday conversation, television, multimedia, websites, and classroom discourse. Goals of the course include giving graduate students tools to collect and analyze language in order to understand its role in the organization and interpretation of social life and cultural meaning systems.
