Course Description
This course provides an introduction to archaeological methods and techniques, as well as an overview of world prehistory with a focus on: 1) the origins of humankind, 2) the relationship of neanderthals to modern humans, including cognitive transitions as indicated by rock art and other artifacts, 3) transitions from hunting and gathering to the neolithic, 4) and the origins of complex societies including the Mississippian in the United States, the Maya and other Meso-American states, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and early Bronze and Iron Age Europe.
