Course Description
This course is designed to introduce students to a series of conceptual and theoretical notions used in analyzing the production, display, and effects of public images of Texas. In particular, this course will focus on the public history and culture displayed at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum (TSHM). As such, the TSHM will serve as a laboratory for our analysis, discussion, and group projects.
Key conceptual and theoretical notions include the definition, meaning, and interpretation of culture; understanding terms like history, memory, the past, and myth; introductory concepts in semiotics, or the science of signs; and an overview of Texas history presented through the rubric of modernity and postmodernity.
