On the Role of Fire in Neandertal Adaptations in Western Europe: Evidence from Pech del Azé IV & Roc de Marsal
Recent excavations in the Mousterian cave sites of Pech Del Aze IV and Roc De Marsal (SW France) have revealed a series of exceptionally well preserved fire features. While these features are interesting for what they may tell us about the use of fire at that time, it is also true that the evidence for pyrotechnology is rare at this time, both at these two sites and in the Mousterian in general. This evidence, along with the question of what it means for the role of fire in Neandertal adaptations, will be discussed.
