Miriam Miranda, Garifuna Land Rights Activist Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH)

Miriam Miranda is a key figure in the struggle to defend Garifuna territorial rights and an organizer with the Garifuna Confederation OFRANEH. The Garifuna are an afro-indigenous people dispersed along the Caribbean coast of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Recent state sanctioned “development” efforts in Honduras have threatened to depose Garifuna coastal residents from their lands as they confront ongoing violence and repression.  Open to the public.

Una Conversación con: Miriam Miranda, Activista Garifuna Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña (OFRANEH)

Miriam Miranda es una figura central en la lucha para los derechos territoriales de los Garifuna y organizadora con la confederación OFRANEH.  Los Garifuna, un pueblo afro-indígena, son dispersados por la costa Caribeña de Belice, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. Recientemente, el estado Hondureño ha promovido proyectos de “desarrollo,” los cuales pretenden despojar los Garifuna de sus tierras ancestrales.  Este proceso ha aumentado las amenazas en contra las comunidades Garifuna, resultando en violencia y represión.  Abierto al público.
