About Social Anthropology at UT
Culture and power, cultural poetics, political economy, hegemony and
resistance, discourse theory, ethnicity, class, and feminist theory are
all taught within the social program of UT Austin. In addition, certain
geographic areas are strongly represented in the research and teaching
program. Faculty members represent a wide area of specialization, which
includes Latin America, the Caribbean Islands, North America, Europe,
the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South and
Southeast Asia, and Oceania. There is particular interest in the native
populations of North, Central, and South America, as well as special
programs in the African Diaspora and in the Mexican American
borderlands. There is ample opportunity for fieldwork and
inter-departmental coursework is encouraged.
