Longhorns Cadets Honor Veterans Day

Posted: November 8, 2006

After speaking to the audience of cadets, veterans, and UT Caissons, the General admimistered the Oath of Office to the newest commissionee from the Longhorn Battalion. Second Lieutenant Michael Angwin (Killeen, TX) is a recent graduate from UT and on Saturday his mother, sister, and girlfriend pinned the gold bars of a second lieutenant on his uniform.

Lieutenant Angwin will serve on active duty as a field artillery officer. He was rendered his first salute by SFC Joshua Gamboa who received a silver dollar for the gesture as prescribed by tradition. Those who witnessed the ceremony gave 2LT Angwin a standing ovation as his father, John, and mother, Byong, proudly watched their second son commission into the US Army.

Following the commissioning ceremony everyone headed outside for a tailgate party preceding the UT vs. OSU football game. The Longhorn Battalion hosted a BBQ in appreciation of veterans, especially those injured in combat. Veterans from Ft. Hood and Camp Mabry as well as on-campus veterans enjoyed free BBQ provided by the UT Caissons.

The Caissons are UT Army ROTC Alumni and were also in attendance for the day’s events. During the BBQ a UT game football autographed by UT head coach Mack Brown was auctioned off in a highly spirited competition that was ultimately won by LTC (ret.) Ray A. Schultz. LTC Schultz is a UT Caisson and the Senior Army instructor at Theodore Roosevelt High School in San Antonio. He was not to be outbid on Saturday and the Longhorn Battalion is extremely grateful for the donation of more than $300.

When everyone had eaten their fill, cadets escorted guests of the UT Army ROTC Battalion to the game at Darrel K Royal Memorial Stadium. UT football players greeted the veterans -- all recently returned from combat overseas -- as they exited the tunnel after pre-game practice.
