ANS 361 • Cultures of Southeast Asia
12:30 PM-2:00 PM
The course aims to provide a general introduction to important themes in the anthropological literature on Southeast Asia. This semester the course will focus on the three countries, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. Classes will include both lecture and discussion. Readings will consist of both social science texts and fiction and memoirs by people from the region. The reading load, while consistently fascinating, is quite heavy. Students should not expect the lectures to substitute for the reading. We will also discuss some American films about the region.
