TAM 320L • Advanced Tamil II
3:00 PM-4:30 PM
TAM 320L is the continuation of TAM 320K and final course of the 3rd level of training in Tamil. The course meets 3 hours a week and carries 3 credit hours. A clear understanding of structural nuances and cultural aspects of Tamil heritage is prime focus of the course. Since, conversational Tamil was learned at the introductory level, and the Modern Literary Tamil (MLT) was learned at the Second year level, the third year Tamil focuses on conversational, MLT, and to some extent, literary Tamil as well. As Tamil is a language with rich literary tradition, diglossic situation (spoken and written differences), dialect variations (regional and social variations in the spoken Tamil) and stylistic variations among modern Tamil writers found in Tamil are brought into the learners in this course through variety of print, audio and video materials.
Since the next level, that is fourth year Tamil will focus on Classical Tamil, little focus will be given to the learners of TAM 320L on the language and structures of Classical Tamil to prepare them for the next higher level. Hence, this course is designed to inculcate interest among the highly motivated learners for their higher learning in the field of Tamil language, literature, history, society, culture and heritage, inscriptions, epigraphy, economy, fine arts and performing arts (architecture, sculpture, dance, theater, music, etc.).
