Course Description

This course will provide and introduction to ideas and concepts in the classical Chinese literary tradition and is open to all students. No previous background in Chinese language, culture or literature required. Readings in English translation will encompass a survey of poetry, prose, fiction, and drama from as early as the seventh century B.C.E. through the 19th century. Course emphasis will be given to pre-modern Chinese literature. Lectures and discussions will focus on the literary, cultural, historical, social, philosophical, and religious background against which selective representative works in poetry, prose, fiction, and drama arose. Background reading will be assigned to supplement the primary works of literature.

The human response to ideas and concepts such as conflict, death, and exile, or loyalty, beliefs, and love, will form the framework within which we will consider our role as readers and our interpretation of the literary treatment of the human response. Lectures, readings and class discussion will examine these ideas and concepts in the context of the Chinese literary memory. In this course, while we will not begin to even sample all the rich literary offerings, we will enjoy a savory taste of some of the very best classical Chinese literature has to offer.
