Course Description

This course will explore twentieth-century Urdu literature, especially its "Progressive" and reformist dimensions. We will read and discuss works of Muhammad Iqbal, Josh Malihabadi, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Sajjad Zaheer, Ali Sardar Jafri, Premchand, Ismat Chughtai and Sadat Hasan Manto.

Grading Policy

Short weekly papers and translations 70% Final research paper 30%
