Course Description
This course will survey the debates over globalization of media in South Asia, with a specific focus on India and the politics of transborder communication between India and other countries in South Asia. The course will critically examine the role of radio, film, television, and the internet in the globalization of culture, politics and economics in South Asia.
Topics covered in the seminar include: 1) impact of colonialism and postcolonial nationalism on South Asian media; 2) the development of state-sponsored media and government regulations in South Asia; 3) the popularity of Bollywood0 films and other regional-language film industries; 4) the emergence of satellite television and its role in the globalization of culture since the 1990s; 5) the rise of internet and online interactions between South Asia and the South Asian diaspora.
