Course Description

The Qawalli constitutes an important devotional literary tradition of South Asia. In addition to appraising the devotional currency of this tradition, the course will also explore the manner in which qawallis engage issues of gender, class, religious differences, and nationalism. relationship between orality and written literature as well as the tension between local aesthetics and processes of globalization will remain pivotal throughout the semester.
