Course Description
The course aims to provide a general introduction to important themes in the anthropological literature on Southeast Asia. In order to unify the course theoretically, rather than just geographically, a guiding topic will be gender and social change in the region today. We will examine how conflicting, and often contested, norms concerning gender roles and relations characterize various societies, including relatively isolated and egalitarian ones, on the one hand, and highly centralized and hierarchial ones, on the other.
