Course Description
The class will read works of Chinese literature from the contemporary (post-1949) period. Short stories and essays written by authors in three contemporary Chinese societies--The People's Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong--will be selected. While basic information on the general historical backgrounds, including significant socio-political events and artistic trends, will be introduced, a substantial part of the class time will be spent on linguistic analysis of pre-assigned parts of the texts and in-depth discussion of the works as cultural products of specific times and places.
