Course Description
This course is first part of Advanced Tamil. The course meets three hours per week and carries three hours of credit. This course aims at introducing the students to the history of Tamil land little briefly. Introduction to the history of Tamil literatures will be part of the program. Development of higher order skills like literary appreciation, translation, etc., is emphasized through the course. The class requires active participation and discussion. In addition to this, each student will write a seminar paper and do class presentation on any cultural aspect of Tamil from literature or from the text lessons or of their interest. Vocabulary development and their use is also an important component of the course besides learning of literary Tamil. Some focus will also be given on the structure of literary Tamil to prepare to understand classical Tamil in future. Tamil diglossia, dialectal variations, styles and translation etc., are other interests of the course. Listening to audio on Tamil Arts, video (Tamil movies), and broadcast news in Tamil through www and comprehending them are part of the program (see the detailed schedule of activities). Also the Advanced learners of Tamil will go to the www Tamil newspapers and bring every week news item their interest to the class. This course is designed to inculcate interest among the learners for further area study. If students are interested in any specific area of their interest in Tamil studies surely they will be encouraged.
