Course Description

This course is an introduction to the principal elements of premodern literary or 'classical' Japanese (bungo,) the standard form of the written language for more than a millennium, and whose features are still found in literary writing, lyrics, and 'period' films. A survey of the main linguistic features will accompany close reading, commentary, and translation of a wide range of prose and poetry texts from the literary canon, from the Nara period through the Meiji period (8th century - early 20th century). The course is intended for all those who wish to read pre-WWII Japanese for cultural knowledge, research and pleasure, experiencing one of the world's richest traditional literatures in its original form, and improving competence reading modern written Japanese.
