Course Description
Explores the emergence and formal development of literary and cultural criticism in Urdu. Students will be exposed to selected texts (written and visual) from India and Pakistan, including the writings of Shamsurrahman Faruqi, Hasan Askari, Zeenat Sajida. Other class topics include: popular culture in modern Urdu speaking communities; gender and sexuality in the constitution of a "popular" culture; nation-states and the mediation/censorship of culture.
