Course Description

This course examines the society and culture of premodern and modern Japan, including family, religion, language, customs and lifestyles, political developments, as well as arts and performances, and the evolving cultural representation and understanding of nature and the environment. In doing so, it will introduce students to how Japanese society and culture has developed and been interpreted, both within Japan and from the outside. The main goal of this course is to provide students with tools to analyze Japanese society and cultural identity as expressed in Japan's major cultural products. Students will also critically examine the way in which Japanese culture and society are represented in the English-speaking world by comparison with in Japan.
