ANS 302K • Introduction to India

This course will contribute to an understanding of modern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh through an examination of illustrative novels, short stories, poetry, films, historiographies and cultural theories. We shall draw attention to such issues as communalism and colonialism while exploring the terrain of multiple histories, cultures and identities that are inherent in this region. Our analysis will be theoretically guided in that we will consider the issue of orientalism throughout the semester.
Grading/Requirements: 2 Exams 20% ea. Final 25% 8-10 page paper 20% Class Attendance/participation 10% Cultural event report 5%
